For many, the emergence of AI has brought a wave of anxiety and skepticism, especially regarding its impact on creative industries and job security. My own journey with artificial intelligence has leaned towards the negative, driven by concerns over its implications for both work and the broader society. However, a recent encounter with Gemini, an AI tool, has begun to shift my perspective, albeit slightly.
A Surprising Discovery
This change in outlook began during a vacation in Spain. While exploring the local culture, I found myself wanting to engage more authentically with the language. I didn’t just want to know how to say a phrase; I also needed to pronounce it correctly. Enter Gemini, which provided me with a phonetic spelling to help me ask for a delicious pastry to take away (pah-rah yeh-bahr), sparing me the embarrassment of fumbling through a YouTube video in public.
Returning to my daily routine, I faced a common dilemma: confirming whether I had returned a review phone to the manufacturer earlier in the year. Normally, this task would plunge me into a frustrating search through countless emails, typing various phrases into the search bar of my email client. However, feeling a bit sluggish post-holiday, I decided to try something different.
In the Gemini section of my Gmail web app, I entered the query: "Is there any indication that I’ve sent the [REDACTED] back?" To my surprise, within seconds, Gemini provided a straightforward answer indicating that I had not, along with a helpful note that the PR had suggested I could keep the device longer for a planned feature. This was not merely a time-saver; it was an unexpected relief.
Less than an hour later, my interactions with Gemini continued to impress me. I received information confirming that Motorola had not released a tablet in the UK or US for nearly 15 years. As a natural skeptic, I took the initiative to verify this information through traditional means. To my surprise, the AI was accurate.
For those already on board with AI technologies, my initial hesitance and limited use may seem quaint. I am fully aware that my cautious approach might not align with the more enthusiastic adopters of AI. Nonetheless, I find myself grappling with the realization that I might be on a slippery slope toward a broader acceptance of these technologies. The efficiency and accuracy of Gemini have left me questioning my previous reservations.
